Craig Douglas is a retired police officer, with working SWAT, and mire pertinent to concealed carry, extensive undercover work. A few years ago, I took Craig's flagship class, ECQC or Extreme Close Quarter Concepts.
Craig's integration of hand combatives with pistol work is absolutely invaluable to understanding how a street encounter can actually go with weapons involved. The class begins with MUC, or "managing unknown contacts". This portionis designed to give you some skills to use in the beginning of an encounter, with several skills and identifying non verbal attack cues.
The next day, some pistol work is done, focusing on keeping the gun oriented toward the threat and keeping it properly retained during a hand fight. Understanding that the gun, if the opponent can get their hands on it too, is literally up for grabs until someone prevails in the hand fight: winner gets a gun.
Next you move into some hand fighting skills, mainly focused on how to retain the gun in and out of the holster, as well as simply controlling another human beings body. Some is based in wrestling, some in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but all of it is designed to be robust techniques usable for people of all sizes and ages.
Finally, there is a live training component. Craig spent years with true professionals trying to figure out how to effectively use safety gear to let people go hard in a fight in class. We are all training partners, so we aren't out to hurt anyone, but the acto of having someone actively try to assert their dominance over you is very intense. The experience was new to some people, but that is great, because the next time they encounter it (in defense) it will not be new. The scenarios are set up as 1 on 1, then 2 on 1 with the 2 on 1 scenario starting from a random verbal encounter. Then appropriate and timely decisions have to be made.
Craig is a true professional at his art, having each block of his instruction set to the minute. His explanation and demonstration is top notch and is definitely someone I recommend to train with.
