Standards vs Skills

There are an absolute pile of drill out there, some large round count, and some very low. Casino, 3M, FAST, Dot Torture, Black Belt, and more. And they are FUN!

The problem is that we try the drill and never follow up to see how far we have come. Or worse, we work a drill without thinking about the skills associated with it. Some drills, like Pistol IQ standards, try to test a number of skills on the same drill. But mostly, it's one or two skills per drill.

So how do I pick a drill that will improve my skills? Well, for the large part, most of them will. The problem comes when we need work in an area not covered by our favorite drill.

For instance, the 5 yard playing card is very good at working the draw and recoil management. However drawing and firing 5 shots does not work transitions to another target or reloads. Now we are in the Casino drill. The casino drill works all the aforementioned, but doesn't work movement or distance shooting. How about malfunctions? What about use of cover?

Most drills are lacking in some way, but that doesn't mean that we don't use them. Find a drill that challenges you in a certain skillset and work it. Keep track of your progress. Then move on to the next thing that needs work. And never forget, it's about better, not perfect.
